rapala history

It all began with a hungry Finnish guy and a carving knife. It was the 1930s when a simple fisherman made an observation of simple genius: Big fish eat little fish, especially little fish that are wounded. So begins the greatest fishing story ever told. As Lauri Rapala fished the waters of Finland’s Lake Paijanne, he quietly rowed and watched. And what he saw was how hungry predator fish would dart into a school of minnows and attack the one that swam with a slightly off-center wobble. Over and over again.

Lauri realized that if he could craft a lure that mimicked the movements of a wounded minnow, he could catch more fish, earn more money, and not spend time constantly baiting lines. So Lauri set to work. He whittled. Carved. And shaved. Eventually a lure began to take shape. Using a shoemaker’s knife and some sandpaper, he created his first successful lure from cork in 1936. Tinfoil from chocolate bars formed the lure’s outer surface. Melted photographic negatives the protective coating. But most importantly, it perfectly imitated the action of a wounded minnow. Legend has it that Lauri sometimes caught 600 pounds of fish a day with that new lure. And as word of his abundant catches spread, the lure’s reputation grew. The rest, as they say, is history. That first lure was the forefather to the lure that has helped more fishermen experience the thrill of more big fish than any other: the legendary Original Floating™ Rapala.

* The wiggle fish can’t resist. As fishermen around the world began to catch more and bigger fish with Rapala’s lure, it became clear that what triggered them was the lure’s tantalizing wiggle and wobble. Because even though fish throughout the world were different, predators and baitfish always acted true to form. Big fish hammers wounded little fish. That’s why Lauri tested each lure to make sure it swam true to the unique “wounded-minnow action.” It wasn’t the fastest way to make a fishing lure. But it was the only way to make a Rapala. (To this day, Rapala lures are hand-tuned and tank-tested to swim perfectly right out of the box.) It’s an action as distinct to a Rapala as a fingerprint is to a person. An action no other company has been able to duplicate.

And so with every unforgettable trip of a lifetime, every successful Saturday afternoon with a kid at the local fishing hole, the Rapala legend grew. And a deep-seated trust began to form between anglers and Rapala. Weekenders became hardcore. Dads became heroes. And more and more fishermen began reaching for Rapala again and again.

A good day fishing. The undisputed mother of invention. For millions, success could be measured by the growing number of trophy fish caught on Rapala lures. (To this day, no other lure holds more world records.) And because we at Rapala are fishermen first, we know not only what our fellow fishermen need, but what they can’t live without. Like when the Shad Rap® exploded onto the scene like a surface-to-air bass hellbent on dinner. Word of the Shad Rap’s amazing ability to catch fish spread like wildfire. Tackle shops sold out across the country. Resort owners and mom-and-pop bait shops rented out Shad Raps by the day. And even by the hour. (Yes, it was that good.) Twenty years later it’s still one of fishing’s most successful lures.

Likewise, the moment Rapala introduced Fish ’n Fillet® knives they enhanced the fishing experience for millions. Until then, fishermen had a long and grizzly history of clumsily whittling down a prized catch to something resembling a fillet of songbird. The tapered design and unique flexibility of the Fish ’n Fillet made filleting easier, which is why to this day they’re still the number one fillet knives in the world. And so a foundation was laid. The successes of the Original Floater,™ Shad Rap® , and Fish ’n Fillet were followed by other Rapala products that found their way into tackle boxes and history books. Lures like the Magnum,® the Rattlin’ Rapala,® the Fat Rap,® the CountDown,® the Husky Jerk,™ and the limited edition Tail Dancer.™

All the world is your honey hole. There’s a reason more fishermen around the world put their faith in Rapala. It’s a confidence that stretches through 140 countries and is validated each year by the 20 million Rapala lures sold. Simply put, Rapala products make better fishermen. Nothing rushed to market, but carefully crafted from years of experience. No shortcuts. No gimmicks. No flash in the pan, next greatest things. It is a legacy of unwavering quality that can be seen in every lure, every fillet knife, every tool, and every cast of our premium monofilament line. A legacy that continues with new Rapala offerings like premium graphite rods, the world’s first long casting line, and more new lures, new actions, new sizes, new colors, new finishes, and new ways of catching more fish.

The sweet smell of success lingers long after the scent of fish slime fades. Tens of millions of walleye, trout, bass, wahoo, snook and tarpon later, Rapala continues to stand the test of time. Through the industry’s ups and downs. Through the coldest cold fronts. Because through it all, one simple truth has endured. That which is irresistible to fish will always be irresistible to the fisherman.

Grouper

kerapu

Grouper
The Serranidae is large and important family of fish, consisting of more than 375 species. These are mostly temperate and tropical marine fish, ranging size from less than 30 cm (12 in) to about 3.7 m (12 ft), and are found near rocks, reef, wrecks, and piers in coastal waters. The larger members of the family are robust, sharp-toothed, basslike fish, which live near the bottom and feed on fish, crustaceans, and shell fish. They tend to be solitary rather than schooling, except at spawning time, and the individuals of many species change sex as they grow: they mature and breed as females, and become males when grow older and larger.
FISHING NOTES
Techniques
Bottom fishing and trolling, using natural or artificial baits, are effective methods for these species. Big species easily found offshore of Terengganu near the oil rigs. Black seabass are also taken from jetties, docks, breakwaters, and piers on saltwater spinning gear and light, general-purpose tackle.
Tackle
For bottom fishing, use a 13.6 to 22.7 kg (30 to 50 lb) class boat rod with a 4/0 to 6/0 multiplier reel and 13.6 to 22.7 kg (30 to 50 lb) mono line; terminal tackle should be a running leger with an 85 to 227 b (3 to 8 oz) pyramid- or bomb-shaped sinker and 2/0 to 6/0 hook. For trolling, try a 36.3 kg (80 lb) class road with a 9/0 multiplier reel, 36.3 kg (80 lb) mono line, a heavy wire leader and 10/0 hook. But trolling on this type of species is not very popular in Malaysia.
Baits
Fish, squid, worms, shrimps, clams, and crab are good baits for bottom fishing. But here mostly of the time they use fillet fish. You can also use natural baits for trolling, as can plugs, spinners, spoons, and feathers especially near rocky reef.
Note: Red Grouper & Jewfish
The red grouper inhabits rocky reefs as depth of 24 to 120 m (80 to 400 ft), but small individuals are sometimes found near the shore in shallow water. This grouper is recognizable by its blotched, reddish coloration, its squared-off tail, and the even top edge of its dorsal fin; the lining of its mouth is orange or deep red. It can attain a weight of 23 kg (50 lb) or more, and fights hard when hooked on light tackle.

This huge grouper (Jewfish) is known to reach a length of 2.4 m (8 ft) and a weight of 310 kg (680 lb), and may grow to 454 kg (1,000 lb) or more. Despite its size, it lives in shallow water - usually not deeper than 30 m (100 ft) - and is found around rocky ledges, wrecks, and pilings. It is not a hard fighter, but its size and weight, and its habit make it difficult to land. The Queensland grouper and Indo-Pacific species, is even even larger and can grow to 3.7 m (12 ft) and over 500 kg (1,100 lb).

Shimano Torsa

Product Description:
High Speed, High Power. With the release of Torsa, Shimano included the largest gear they could build. This gear is 22% larger than the Trinidad drive gear and 67% larger than the venerated TLD 25. The amount of power generated by Torsa's "drivetrain, oversized handle shank and Ergonomic Power Grip is unbelievable. Power of the reel is a Super Stopper one-way roller bearing with Assist Stopper back-up ratchet anti-reverse system. The system has no backplay for solid hooksetting power and the reliability of two anti-reverse systems. "The oversized drag washer, can generate" incredible drag pressures for a reel its size, and is created using the same proven material used in" the Tiagra series of 2-Speed lever drag reels. Castability - Meticulous machining of the Cold Forged Aluminum spool, the overall weight of the spool was reduced to lower the startup inertia. At the same time, most of the mass is distributed outward. This results in the spool spinning longer, just like a bicycle wheel, where the tire and rim contain most of the wheel's mass." Variable Braking System uses centrifugal force to slow down the spool at the beginning of the cast, then reduces the braking force as the spool slows. This gives a much more consistent spool speed, which translates into a more manageable cast. And lastly, the handle side of the spool is taller than the non-handle side. This extended spool lip gives the angler a very consistent surface to thumb during the cast. It has shown to be valuable in testing, as it provides more manageability than thumbing the inconsistent surface of the line on the spool. Rapid Fire Quick Change Drag Cam System - With the new Rapid Fire Quick Change Drag Cam System found exclusively on Torsa, this versatile reel can change to cater to specific techniques. By simply putting the reel into freespool and backing off the preset knob, the angler removes the drag cam from the reel. Then, by inserting one of 8 available Rapid Fire drag cams, you completely change how the reel is set up to fish within a matter of seconds. No tools required, and no screws to fall onto the deck of the boat. On the attached PDF you will see these 8 different drag curves and the specific fisheries they are applicable to. From light line world record seekers, to braided line fanatics looking to tackle huge fish on small tackle, to the specific needs of chunk fishermen in the Northeast, Torsa can do it all. Torsa comes equipped with our L.R.S. (Long Range Special) Rapid Fire Drag Cam, which was made popular by reels in our Tiagra line. There are 7 other cams available at your Torsa retailer depending upon your target fisheries. Each of the Torsa reels contains the following features: Super Stopper. Assist Stopper. Ratcheting Drag Lever. Ergonomic Power Handle. Clicker. Metal Series.

TPOLLING TENGGRI

TROLLING
TENGGIRI

Tenggiri or Narrow is a fish that you can catch witch many technique of fishing. One of the technique is trolling. Trolling is the way where the bait attract slowly by using boat, no matter what is the bite that you choose to use either plug (wobbler, minnow, shallow-diver and deep-diver) or fresh bait.

RAPALA LURE

A trolling motor is a small engine affixed to the bow or stern of an angler's boat that provides a source of power for slowly trolling a lure or natural bait through water where fish are sought, or to allow for precision maneuvering of the boat so that the Angler can more effectively cast his bait to where the fish are located.

Trolling motors usually are electric powered, with a battery providing energy, but small internal combustion engines are sometimes used. Trolling motors are often used as an alternative to larger engines that propel fishing boats to and from preferred fishing areas. Trolling motors and their small propellers can usually be lifted, either manually or via an electronic system, from the water to reduce drag when the larger engine is used for propulsion.

Trolling motors are also commonly used as the primary source of propulsion for smaller water craft, such as canoes and kayaks. Additionally the electric varieties are well suited as a primary source of power for use on lakes where the use of a gas powered engine is prohibited.

MALAYSIA FRESHWATER FISHING

FRESHWATER FISHING

Malaysia’s rivers and natural and man make lakes are home to over 300 species of freshwater fish of which around 40 species can be caught on rod and line.
The prime freshwater sport fish include the ferocious Giant Snakehead, the fast running Malaysian Jungle Perch, the Giant Featherback, the massive fresh water Catfish and the elusive but powerful Malaysian Mahseer.
The Giant Snakehead or "Toman” is a powerful fighter and can attain a weight of more than 20kg. However, common catches average around the 5 to 10kg mark. The Giant Featherback or “Belida” also attains a size of over 20kg while the Catfish or “Tapah” can reach more than 50kg. The Malaysian Mahseer, a sub species of the Indian Mahseer, is probably one of the most powerful of the freshwater fish. Although not as big as its Indian cousin, it nevertheless provides excellent sport. Arowana or “Kelisa” as known locally is a totally protected species. Now only caught in the more remote areas, this fish is a superb fighter, but must be released if caught. Freshwater fishing can be relatively easy with may pay ponds in close proximity to all west coast Peninsula Malaysia towns. Also there are few resort fisheries which offer a wide range of accommodation, a variety of activities and well-shocked fishing ponds. For the more hardy angler, jungle excursions which may involve trekking and camping can be arranged. A few excellent fishing centres are also be found on the fringes of Malaysia’s massive man made lakes.

ANGEL ROD RANGE

ANGEL ROD RANGE

Howard Croston, our specialist product adviser and England Team Member, explains exactly what we were trying to achieve with the Angel.

"Our objectives were to make the lightest, most responsive rod ever made. We wanted a rod that could deliver great performance with a minimum of effort. And that’s what we’ve done. The Angel gives great loop formation, and you can point, lift and shoot out a line with bull’s-eye accuracy. It is as close as we can get to that indescribable buzz you feel when you pick up a rod that you know instantly is made for you. The Angel isn’t just physically light – we’ve shaved half an ounce off virtually every other comparable fl y rod in
the world - but it feels light."

"So, we’ve built the best rod in the world. Where did we go from there? Well, to the guides and the ghillies of the world. We put the Angel through a whole year of trials in every conceivable climate and water type - for fish big and small. Long casting. Short casting. Baking hot or freezing cold, the Angel has been there and done it. I’ve lived with the rod for well over a year and it’s truly great. I love it. Definitely my favourite rod.”

We also realise that the best rod in the world deserves to see the world so we’ve built a multi-piece Smuggler version. This breaks down into a rod tube short enough to fit into any suitcase, holdall or aircraft locker so that you never need to go anywhere without your guardian Angel.

The Angel has won a host of awards and received fantastic reviews world wide. It's the most talked about range for years. The hope we had for it during its development have been more than realized. Its lightness and fast tip action gives incomparable loop formation. You can point, lift and shoot out a line with unerring accuracy.

The Angel range has now been increased for 2007, with the following rods added for specific purposes:

* The 8' #3 - is capable of cushioning the lightest of tippets yet still throws the tightest of loops in confined places.
* The 8'6" #4 - fast and responsive it turns over larger mayflies and bulky sedges yet retains precision and control.
* The 10' #6 - the all round still water rod, ideal for top of the water techniques and fast coverage of rising fish.
* The 9'6" #8 - the long distance bank rod or powerful sea trout weapon

ANGEL REEL

ANGEL REEL

The Angel performance fly reels represent the absolute pinnacle from a specification, performance and design perspective. These reels set the standard to which every manufacturer must now aspire. Competitively priced, the five-model range is set to become one of the best-selling Hardy reels of all time. The reel is made from the highest quality aluminum, specially manufactured to ensure both lightness and extreme strength. It is then subjected to an accelerated maturing and stress relieving process that gives the highest possible performance and durability.

If any one product reflects perfectly the reinvention of Hardy then perhaps it's the Angel reel. We were always confident that its looks, construction and performance were flawless and its reputation has grown almost daily since its introduction. Today, it is considered the benchmark reel for the serious world fly angler. It is probably the first classic of the new century.

So, why the acclaim? The large arbor gives low line memory, rapid line retrieval and low start-up inertia to suit light tippets. In its larger sizes, the reel boasts four square inches of break surface area. What this gives is an extremely smooth and reliable drag system whether at the lightest or the heaviest settings. It's a centralized drag system, too, so it's easily accessible and easy to set where you, the angler, want it to be. The reel is light, infinitely strong and endlessly reliable.

For use with smaller lighter rods, there is the Angel Featherweight option. This is exactly the same as its bigger brothers apart from a wide ranging click check to protect light weight tippets.

The reel is anodized to architectural standards that increase the hardness of the aluminum by an amazing four hundred per cent. The satin-silver finish is deliberately made anti-glare and is complemented by champagne-gold highlights that proclaim the reel for what it is – a timeless masterpiece.
